Les Pedreres de s’Hostal in Menorca

A natural labyrinth

The s’hostal quarry is located along the Camí Vell de la Ronda Sud, just one kilometre from Ciutadella, forming an impressive natural labyrinth. Among them, you can enjoy the harmony and magic of the Marés stone, a permeable sandstone of varying hardness and tonality, which has been used as a building material on the island from the Megalithic culture to the present day.

The s’hostal quarry complex (Ciutadella) forms a very interesting landscape. It is one of the most beautiful ethnological sites on the island of Menorca. The site consists of several open spaces in the open air, where people have been quarrying stones for centuries. These stones were used to build houses and buildings in Ciutadella. In 1994 it ceased to be used as a quarry, and in 1995 the non-profit association LÍTHICAleased it in order to revalue the space. Since then, continuous recycling, cleaning and improvement work has been carried out, as it was previously used as a rubbish dump.

These quarries are divided into two main areas; the hand quarry shows the beautiful space carved by the quarryman; while the mechanical quarry is cubic and linear.

The Lithica association carried out different activities in this area, setting up trails and routes, and beautifying some areas. In summer, it is a venue for concerts and other events.

In 1997, it was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest, in recognition of its heritage values.
