Wines, beers and distillates, desserts and honey, and of course the island’s cheese and cured meats. Visit Us and discover all the flavours that make Menorca an incredible island.
The most international product: Cheese
Cheese is not just another product, but a defining and international product that defines Menorcan cuisine. No wonder more than 500,000 pieces are produced every year. The designation of origin for ‘Mahón’ cheese was obtained in 1985 and was extended to ‘Mahón-Menorca’ in 1997.
The most famous sauce: Mahonesa
The French themselves have succumbed to the evidence that mayonnaise originated here, in Menorca. This sauce needs little introduction: the base is a cold emulsion of eggs and olive oil, seasoned with salt, vinegar or lemon juice.
Do you prefer salty…?
Pigs are considered outstanding animals for the production of sausages, and there are so many varieties that foreigners in particular are surprised. Porquetjades or, to put it another way, the slaughter of the pig, is a prominent social event in which family members come together to share the task of cutting and preparing each sausage.
Or are you more of a sweetie?
Entering a bakery in Menorca is synonymous with filling your senses with an endless array of desserts, snacks and sweet and savoury cakes, an unbeatable temptation. With every reign lived on the island, the pastry tradition has always been chosen from here and there. French, Arabic and English have left their mark on traditional Menorcan cuisine. Especially in desserts.
The pleasure that the sea gives us
Who knows, repeat. For this reason, if what you fancy is a good rice stew, a
grilled rockfish or a red prawn with a single seasoning, it is important to quickly find a place in the island’s restaurants to savour the pleasure of Menorcan fishing. What the sea provides in Menorca is not only food, it is pure pleasure.
The art of honey
Menorca is a paradise for bees thanks to the wide variety of flora and the Biosphere Reserve, which protects the environment. The bees are responsible for turning the honey they extract from the nectar into one of the most highly valued honeys in the whole of Spain.
Miraflores honey, single-flower honey, made from sulla, heather, rosemary and blackberry. These are the varieties offered by the more than 1500 bee huts on the island.
